Encouraging Empathy during 7 Days of Genius

This morning, 92Y hosted a Facebook live with Rabbi Peter Rubinstein, Director of Jewish Community and the Bronfman Center for Jewish Life at 92Y and Imam Al-Hajj Talib ‘Abdur-Rashid, the religious and spiritual leader of The Mosque of Islamic Brotherhood Inc., in Harlem. Together they discussed the question, How can we encourage more empathy and connection between individuals and distinct communities? This is one of the questions we are addressing for #7DaysofGenius this week.

Here are their final thoughts:
Imam Al-Hajj Talib: “Neither the Jewish nor Muslim communities are monolithic communities. And if we start looking at each other through a prism of being neighbors, and being fellow Americans, and talking with each other, instead of to each other, we’ll all be better off.”
Rabbi Peter Rubinstein: “I think that what we can do, is begin conversations with somebody that we’ve most certainly not have had a meal with, but also have probably never asked their story. And if we can do that, we’ll work together toward a year of light.”
